]]> http://www.penelopespitstop.net/back-to-school/feed/ 0 Cutting Glove http://www.penelopespitstop.net/cutting-glove/ http://www.penelopespitstop.net/cutting-glove/#comments Fri, 08 Apr 2011 14:25:22 +0000 Penelope http://www.penelopespitstop.net/?p=1950 Last week, my mom had a health scare when she discovered she had a very large blood clot in her leg.  It was a miracle that they found it before anything devastating happened.  Since then, she is facing the inevitable 6 months of Coumadin to keep her blood thin to allow the clot to heal.  This [...]]]> Last week, my mom had a health scare when she discovered she had a very large blood clot in her leg.  It was a miracle that they found it before anything devastating happened.  Since then, she is facing the inevitable 6 months of Coumadin to keep her blood thin to allow the clot to heal.  This is not something any of us are thrilled about, but at the same time, we are grateful that there is a solution to remedy her problem.  Because Coumadin keeps her blood thin, she can’t have any sort of bleeding event…none.  If so, her blood won’t clot and she will bleed out.  This includes cutting her fingers with a knife while cooking.  This is a skill I acquired from my mom.  I have several scars on my fingers from cutting them while chopping onions or whatnot.  We cut our fingers a lot.

What I should get her is a knife cutting class at the Viking Store…and I should join her.  However, time is of the essence and I set out to buy her a cutting glove.  This little glove feels pretty soft, but it is made from stainless steel fibers to prevent slicing of her fingers.  I was expecting it to be like a suit of armour, but it’s a rather comfortable little glove.  In hindsight, I should have purchased one for me as well.

Grammy is excited about her new gift.  Should you surprise her in the kitchen, she will be chopping away with a silver glove on her left hand resembling the likes of Michael Jackson.  Hopefully, it will save her the trauma of a small cut that could turn ugly.  The next step is to buy her that suit of armour to protect the rest of her body while simply walking down the street…

I will be the first to admit that I don’t always love “cutsie” type things, but I love these cute things.   I especially love how Laura, the designer and owner, incorporates scripture in to her art.  I first fell in love with her set of 8 ornaments that tell the Christmas Story in Luke.  When I got on her site to find them, my jaw dropped as I stared and scrolled thru all her darling pottery and gifts.  I could blog on this place for weeks…and I just might.  Today, however, I had to pick one thing and that is going to be the set of Christmas ornaments.  I only bought one, but it leaves a collection of gifts open to my gift-giving friends and family…hint!

I know I have said this many times before, but I really am completely committed to Penelope’s Pitstop.  What I haven’t been good at saying is that I am struggling with my health.  There.  It’s out there.  I had so many inquiries in to my health when I did the Candida Diet [...]]]> I’m here! I’m here! I know I have said this many times before, but I really am completely committed to Penelope’s Pitstop.  What I haven’t been good at saying is that I am struggling with my health.  There.  It’s out there.  I had so many inquiries in to my health when I did the Candida Diet to kill off the yeast in my body that I realized I should be much more open about my fight for my health if for nothing else than to help those of you who are or know someone who is sick.  I have Crohn’s Disease and have more recently battled severe anemia secondary to a surgery I had ten  years ago.  So, my time has been spent recovering and attempting to rest.  I have a future of a very intense diet, but am biding my time until after the holidays.  I will keep you posted on that.

I still have so many fun things I want to share for Christmas.  This is the first year of my life that my family invested in a fake tree.  I was heartbroken, but I am weary of everyone in my house being sick from Thanksgiving thru Christmas with their allergies, which inevitably turn in to sinus or ear infections.  I don’t have allergies, but I hate watching my family suffer.    So, I agreed to a fake tree as long as I could pick it out.  I found a beautiful tree that I love and it really looks so real.  The only thing missing is that fabulous scent as you walk past a real tree.  It was certainly missing that “mmmm!” as you draw a deep breath of the tree.

Last weekend, I was shopping with my mom and sister and found what now seems to be a hard-to-find treasure!  I found a very potent and delicious smelling room spray that makes my fake tree seem unbelieveably real to the sniffer!  The sales lady kept reinforcing not to get the oil on your skin, so don’t do that.  However, it is a fabulous, lasting spray.  She suggested to spray it on wood for long-term use.  A smart woman she was when she suggested to spray it on a piece of wood from outside and tuck it behind something.  It will last longer when fully absorbed.  I sprayed it on my tree and could still smell it the next day.  However, I might just try her wood trick, too.  So, the flavor is Trimming The Tree by Olio.  As I searched to find it on-line, I discovered how difficult it is to find!  I am thrilled to have happened upon it in the boondocks of Oklahoma so I can now share it with you.

I am SO EXCITED!  I LOVE, LOVE paper products, as you might already know.  I consider myself close to expert on what paper products are out there, as I do a large amount of paper purchasing on the web.  Wait, I do all of it on the Internet!  They, I mean WE, have SO many cute things….notepads, flat cards, fold-over cards, placemats, gift stickers, gift cards, calendars, holiday cards, wine tags.  Ladies, the list goes on and on.  The day I received my samples in the mail, I was on Cloud 9.  “A kid in a candy store” doesn’t even come close.  So, I have been diligently working on my samples and getting organized for my first official party…at my house!  I had no idea I would be selling darling paper products at my own house!

On Friday, my oldest son announced as he walked in the door that it was his teacher’s birthday.  It’s the beginning of the year and she has already done so much for us that I couldn’t believe we missed her birthday.  Gratefully, I had just the perfect gift waiting for her!  While chip clips can be used in so many places…in the kitchen, bathroom, office…I thought they would be perfect for a teacher to use somewhere on her desk or in her classroom.  And these offer the perfect flair!

Now, identification has to take place.  I have used several different name label/sticker companies in the past and have been pleased with them.  But I have just discovered Name Bubbles.   I first noticed that they were cute, then affordable, then I was really sold when I discovered I could include more information on a sticker than just my child’s name.  I bought a “pack” of stickers, including my customizing them with all three of our phone numbers (home, mommy cell, daddy cell).  I love this feature, as we have been in a scary instance before where my oldest son, gratefully, knew our phone number…but he didn’t know our cell numbers for sure.  The situation could have been completely prevented had he just had our cell number with him.  So, I am thrilled to put the labels with our phone numbers on everything that leaves the house…lunch box, backpack, baseball bat, batting helmet, Nintendo DS and if I have to, I will stick one in their shoe!  This way, my boys can always have our phone numbers handy.  As we learned, even if they know our numbers, sometimes in a scary situation, they can forget. 

Beyond safety, the name tags mark our property.  I have three boys.  While I love to be organized, I have yet to see my organized gene show up “loudly” in either of my boys.  What this means, is lost articles!  My boys are responsible boys, but things sometimes get left if they aren’t reminded to pick up EVERYTHING.

Cute, of course, is a great quality of these labels that will quickly fade from my boys’ priority list, but they are cute.  The labels are dishwasher safe, laundry safe, waterproof, etc etc when used properly.  I can’t say enough about Name Bubbles!  I even ordered some for myself to stick on my camera or on a dish that I take to potlucks.  So many uses and great ways not to lose your things.   Click the link below to check out all the fun packages and assortments you can choose for your kiddos.  School has begun.  Time to label everything you own!

First things first.  If you want to be organized, you must start with a calendar to keep you on track.  I am a picky little girl when it comes to my calendars and there are a very few that I like to use.  Amy Knapp’s Family Organizer is certainly on the top of my list.    This calendar is created by Amy, a mom, and she knows what we moms need to keep it together during the week.  The calendar is week view, with a month view at the front of each month.  On each page is a column for a grocery list and a column to plan your menus for the week…all in one spot!  (We need things to be concise, don’t we?)  An added personal touch is that the left page not only has space for a pretty big “To-Do” list, but a quote of the week to ponder while you sit in car line.  The back of the book is equipped with stickers to put on each day to remind you of a birthday, anniversary, vacation, school’s out, doctor’s appointments and more.  Of course there is a quick reference section for phone numbers, sitter information, etc.  She has thought of everything!  I love this calendar.  If you like, it comes in a “Christian Version,” as well, with the thoughts for the week being verses, etc.  Even better, the calendar runs from July 2010-December 2011.  I love those extended calendars because they allow me to keep scheduling when I wait to the last minute to buy my new one!
